A Brief Memo from David
Please enjoy reading this, because I had to completely redo it. I accidentally deleted the wrong page and couldn't recover it. Weebly should really look into adding an undo feature. It was completely my fault, however I'm still very very very very frustrated. By frustrated I mean angry beyond what appropriate words can convey.
The theme that was displayed throughout the entirety of the story was that civilization and order is superior than savagery. William Golding brilliantly conveyed this throughout the story. When the boys first landed on the island it was order that brought them all together and stopped chaos from breaking out. The conch shell which was a symbol for order was respected by all of the kids. The conch brought order to the tribe by only allowing the kid holding it the right to speak. Of course the conch wasn't actually preventing other kids from physically talking, but the order it brought stopped the chaos. In that specific survival situation it was crucial that all of the boys were calm and orderly.
Ralph was a major advocate for order to be brought into their tribe. He believed that having rules and following them was vital for not only survival, but to be rescued from the island. Under the rules that Ralph had set someone was to always be looking after the signal fire in case a ship were to pass by. When the rules were followed it was a simple task, however when they weren't it proved to be difficult. Jack, the biggest threat to order on the island, strongly believed that the way to survive was to hunt. In order to satisfy this belief he had to abandon the signal fire. While he was away a ship passed by and Ralph was unable to signal the ship because there was no fire. If the rules had been obeyed then they may have gotten off the island right then.
After Jack left to make his own new tribe that focused on hunting, a couple of the boys died. Under Ralph's rules everyone was relatively safe, however when Jack was in charge two boys were murdered. This was the biggest indicator that Golding was trying to convey that Ralph's way of leading was far superior than Jack's. If things go as far as kids killing each other it should serve as a sign that something isn't right with the situation. Overall it is important for the reader to meditate deeply about this important life lesson, and to be gracious that it was conveyed so well be William Golding.
